School lunches in Wyandotte, Michigan are getting a healthy eating makeover as schools are focusing on limiting calories and sodium and introducing more healthy choices like fruits, vegetables and whole grain breakfast bars.
This is in an effort to get ahead of a proposed ruling by the US Department of Agriculture earlier this year to make school lunches healthier. That ruling has not become official yet, but the schools in Wayne County are not waiting to make changes. They seek to slowly incorporate healthy changes over time so that students are not shocked by switching over all at once. The district already serves low-fat and fat free milk, and 100% fruit juice. Foods are also baked rather than fried, including even the french fries and chicken nuggets. Whole wheat rolls, romaine lettuce and more legumes are also recent changes, and elementary students have seen more peas, baked beans and green beans replacing potatoes.

According to a recent study, drinking coffee doubles certain fast food health risks. Apparently washing down a fast food meal with coffee can double blood sugar levels, raising them to levels on par with patients at risk of diabetes. In the study, six men were given a cocktail of fats and six hours later then had a sugary drink.
Their blood sugar levels were 32% higher than others who had no fat, but another group given the equivalent of two cups of coffee five hours after the fat cocktail showed blood sugar levels 65% higher than baseline. Fats impair the body's ability to produce insulin, which removes sugar from the blood. One of the study researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada said that having sugar remain in the body for long periods is unhealthy because it can lead to organ damage.
